I’m Belinda Smallwood, artist, art teacher and mum of two.
My passion for art began at an early age. I remember as a child the excitement and joy I felt from the creative world. I was always looking for things to make, colour and create. I found great comfort in my creativity and it gave me a strong sense of identity as a child.
At the completion of Year 12, both my 2 Unit and 3 Unit major artworks were exhibited in Art Express, the annual exhibition of exemplary artworks for the Higher School Certificate.
I deepened my passion for art with the completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of NSW and a Graduate Certificate in Creative Arts for Children from the University of Technology, Sydney. I continue to paint and exhibit works and have done many paintings for charity.
I am fascinated by children’s artwork. When children are creating art, they are in the moment, expressing in a very automatic and abstract way. Art is a fantastic tool for children and teenagers to communicate their feelings and experiences.
I have a gift for breaking down walls, enabling children to freely express themselves, while at the same time teaching them artistic skills and techniques.
My philosophy is that art teaches us not to be so precious. It gives us patience and we learn from our mistakes, remembering our best work can be done by accident. Art pushes our boundaries, testing our expectations and limitations. Art is about freedom. We are all given creativity as a gift but it is lost along the way.
I have crafted my studio into a space where students are able to respect and learn from one another. Human beings are all different; therefore our artworks could never be the same.
